I am a fan of the un-salad, defined as any salad other than those with a pile of leafy greens. I know leafy greens are good for me, but much as I try to like them, I pretty much eat those types of salads because I think I should.
Un-salads let me feel virtuous without the lettuce (or arugula, for the Obama supporters). One un-salad I've enjoyed this summer is a riff on a Cooking Light recipe. I split a couple of cucumbers in half, seed and slice them, and toss with a little kosher salt in a colander. Half an hour later, I add a spritz or two of fresh lime juice and some chopped mango (frozen works). The original recipe called for cayenne but that wasn't to my taste. It's refreshing, healthy and not a radicchio leaf in sight.
